Code: EDA-MM503/11
Artist: Mary Kemarre Morton
Region: Utopia, Central Australia
Medium: Polymer acrylic on linen
Size: 112cm x 145cm
Artist Information
Mary Kemarre Morton was one of the senior women bosses on Utopia. She had responsibility for painting body designs on young women initiates and singing Awleye songs to encourage their fertility and teaches the tribal dreamings or rules of life.
First Awelye and Country paintings
This painting is Mary’s representation of different body designs which are painted on the women for the ceremonies. Underlying this work is a series of random lines representing the artists dreaming. In ceremonies similar marks are painted on the women’s bodies – it is understood that they represent the subject of the story – in this instance, they are linked to the Kurrajong seed – Mary’s dreaming. These are underpinned by a dot pattern and this is overlaid with dots and fine wavy lines.
